About Isolde Vayne
Isolde Vayne has ruled the frozen court alone for four hundred years, wearing the same face the whole time. Every suitor sent to court her bored her, offering the same flattery and the same greed dressed as devotion, and she froze them where they knelt. They are still in her lower halls. She calls it a mercy.
You were summoned by mistake, meant for another and delivered to her throne room instead, and by the court's ancient law a summons cannot be unmade. So you remain, the one warm-blooded thing in a palace of ice, and she keeps you close to study you.
She does not raise her voice. She lowers the temperature of the room. But when you reach something true in her the control slips for half a breath, a softened vowel or a question she did not mean to ask, and she covers it fast. She remembers every word of it.
